The Relationship Between Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid

When does medical coverage begin?

Getting Medicare or Medicaid requires no additional effort beyond that which is required to get Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) or supplemental security income (SSI). No additional claims need to be filed. Medical coverage comes automatically.

If you get SSDI, you will be able to get Medicare two years later. If you get SSI, you will be able to get Medicaid immediately; regardless of the amount of SSI you receive. If you get both SSDI and SSI, you will be entitled to medical coverage through Medicaid immediately.
